Home Remedies for Bursitis



Inflammation of bursa is known as bursitis. Bursa is found in every joint.

Bursa acts as shock absorber between joints and ligaments.

There are 150 bursa in our body.

Causes for Bursitis:

  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Overuse of the joint
  • Obesity
  • Some sports profession like athletics
  • Heavy physical work
  • Disease conditions like gout, arthritis

Symptoms of Bursitis:

  • Pain
  • Rigidity of the joint
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Feeling of warmth in joint
  • Burning sensation
  • Limited range of motion

Treatment of Bursitis:

  • Follow RICE therapy

R – give rest to the affected joint.

I  –  apply ice over the affected joint

C –  compression of affected joint

E –  elevate the affected joint by keeping a pillow underneath.

  • Applying ice over the affected joint for 10 minutes. Repeat this for every one hour  This reduces swelling and helps to relieve bursitis
  • Applying castor oil over the affected joint is a effective remedy for bursitis
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water and drink to cure this.
  • Put some drops of lavender oil in bathing water and take bath. This soothens the pain in the joint and helps in relieving it.
  • Mix carrot juice and lemon juice and take 1/2 cup of this mixed juice twice daily to relieve this.
  • Immerse a piece of cotton ball in tea tree oil and sponge the affected joint with this cotton. This reduces the inflammation and cures
  • Include it.calcium and vitamin B12 and magnesium in your diet

Prevention of Bursitis:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Bend your knees and lift objects from floor. This will reduce strain on hip bursa
  • Use wheeled cart for carrying heavy loads
  • Maintain ideal body weight
