Home Remedies for Toothache

Toothache is defined as aching pain caused by tooth decay or inflammation of tooth pulp or irritation of nerve roots.

Left over food between the teeth reacts with bacteria in the mouth and results in tooth decay.

Toothache may be stabbing, throbbing, sharp or shooting pain.

Causes for toothache:

  • Gum diseases
  • Dental cavity
  • Tooth decay
  • Emergence of wisdom teeth
  • Trauma
  • Jaw diseases like Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Symptom of heart disease like myocardial infarction or angina.
  • Excessive consumption of candies, chocolates, refined carbohydrates, soft drinks.

Symptoms for toothache:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness around tooth
  • Sensitive to hot and cold food products

Treatment  for tooth ache:

  • Chew small ¬†onion for 3-5 minutes. This kills bacteria and relieves tooth ache.
  • Keep a clove garlic and pinch of salt on the affected tooth and hold it for 2 minutes.this relieves tooth decay.
  • Gargle your mouth with saltwater. This cleanses the tooth and reduces tooth decay.
  • Drink wheat grass juice to relieve tooth ache
  • Put few guava leaves in water and boil it. Then drink this warm water to get rid of tooth ache.
  • Rubbing ice over the aching tooth relieves tooth ache
  • Rubbing ice between forefinger and thumb also relieves toothache as it controls the pain impulse passing through the nerve pathway.
  • Place asofetida powder over the aching tooth to prevent tooth ache.
  • Prepare juice from spinach leaves and apply over the aching tooth to get rid of tooth ache.
  • Make a paste with cinnamon powder and honey and apply over aching tooth 3-4 times per day. This is a good remedy for tooth ache.
  • Boil 2-3 inch bark of neem tree and 4-8 cloves in water and strain this mixture and store in a bottle. Use this as drops at the affected tooth to relieve tooth ache

Prevention of toothache:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily
  • Clean your tongue along with brushing your teeth
  • Avoid chewing tobacco
  • Avoid eating excessive sweets
  • Visit your dentist once in 6 months
