Sunburn Home Remedies



Sunburn is the painful inflammation, redness and blistering of the skin caused by over exposure to the sun.

The burns are a result of Ultra Violet (UV) light from the sun, exposed to the skin. It can happen within thirty minutes exposure to the sun.

Sometimes when the sunburn is severe, blood vessels and skin cells can become damaged. It is good to avoid repeated sunburns, because they can increase the risk of developing skin cancer, and signs of premature aging such as wrinkles. You will need some special home remedies for relief.

Symptoms of sunburn

Some of the symptoms are include throbbing headache, dizziness, feeling of passing out, hot skin, red skin, flushed face, fatigue, and falling unconscious.

Natural cures for sunburn

Lavender Essential oil

Combine aloe gel with 2 drops of lavender essential oil and apply the mixture over the burned skin to soothe the pain and speed sunburn treatment. Lavender encourages new skin growth and is superb healer for first degree burns.

Green tea home remedy

A compress made from green tea can reduce sunburns and relieve the sting. Boil 8 ounces of water and pour it over one teaspoon of green tea.

Cover and steep for 5 minutes and dilute it with equal amount of cool distilled water. Soak a clean cloth in the cool tea and lay it to the sunburned skin for about 10 minutes. You can do this 3-4 times in a day as needed.

Tea and cider vinegar bath

You can add these soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients to a bath to help treat sunburn. Add 1 cup of black tea for anti-inflammatory tannin, and 1 cup of apple cider vinegar (a soothing remedy), to your bath water. And soak yourself in it for about 20 minutes. You can also add 7 drops of lavender essential oil in the water.

Calendula cream

Calendula cream has been used for many years to relieve sunburn. Apply a small amount of a cream containing calendula, 3 times a day for treatment.

Cool whip Spread cool whip on the sunburn area and let it sit for 20 minutes, and rinse off with lukewarm water.

Diaper rash ointment remedy Apply some diaper rash ointment such as desitin to the sunburn to reduce pain and redness.

Mustard – sunburn home treatment

Rub some mustard on the sunburn to stop stinging and prevent blistering. Let it dry on the skin.

Corn starch sunburn remedy

Add enough water to corn starch to make a paste and, and apply it to the sunburn for relieve.

Milk of magnesia remedy

Apply milk of magnesia to the sunburned skin and let it dry. Allow it to stay on overnight. It keeps the skin cool all night and relieves the pain.

Vitamins and supplements

You will need vitamin A to nourish the skin and destroy free radicals which can harm cells in the body. Take the dosage as recommended. Pregnant women need to observe the required dosage for them. Vitamin E also helps in tissue repair and healing of scar tissue.

Belladonna remedy helps the body to recover from mild to moderate sunburn. If the symptoms of the sunburn include bright red skin, throbbing skin, hot skin, and sometimes pounding headaches, use belladonna for treatment. Follow the recommended dosage.

One of the simplest home remedies is to stay out of the sun from 11 am to 3 pm, especially during summer time. Apply some of these remedies to your skin, and experience the outcome.
