Botanical Name – Hydnocarpus wightiana Blume

Synonyms –  Katu Kapittha , Kustha Vairi , Alasakapaha .

Botanical Description –

An evergreen deciduous tree , upto 15.2 m or more in height , with fluted stem . Bark rough , brown . Wood Whitish , but generally  turns browniah –grey due to fungal sap-stain and becomes streaked . Leaf- oblong , ovate or elliptic, somewhat serrate , 10.2-15.4 cm long . Flowers – small , solitary or borne in fascicles , greenish – white . Fruit – globose , mammilate , tomentose , 5.1-10.2 cm diameter . Seeds – 15-20 , striate , subovoid , obtusely angular , 2.0-2.5 cm . long

Distribution – common in the tropical forest of western ghats from konkan southwards .

Chemical Constituents –

Seeds and Seed hulls – Hypnocarpic , chaulmoogric  and its homologues , gorlic , oleic and palmitic acids ; apigenin . Luteolin , chrysocrisol , hydnocarpin , isohynocarpin and methoxy hydnocarpia .

Indication –

Kusta, Pramehe , Netra Roga , Kandu , Krimi .

Therapeutic Uses-

  1. Netra roga – Pulp of Tuvaraka fruit , rock salt and Srotonjanaare made as coal by Antardhuma process first . Then the chaulmogar oil is mixed with it and applied as eye ointment in pilla roga (Arma) , Naktandhya (nyctalopia) , Kaca-Neeli- Timira rogas (S.S.Ci. 13)
  2. Rasayana – Chaulmogar oil is used as Rasayana (A.H.Ut. 32).

Parts Used – Phala majja (Fruit pulp ) , Bija (Seeds) , Bija Taila ( Seed Oil)

Dosage – oil- about 10ml for sodhana procedures ; seed powder 1to 3 g .

    In daily practice Kapittha phal majja mostly used.famous kalpas are kapitthashtak churna (va.chi.atisar),kavthache aushadh(sirancha yog).
